If you’re feeling down after baby, it could be just the baby blues. But if they linger or even worsen, you could be the one in seven new mothers who experiences postpartum depression (PPD). So what are they? PPD symptoms linger and are generally more intense than those of post-pregnancy blues. They’re different for everyone, so if you’re experiencing any three of the symptoms in the second column, you should consult a physician. 

Post-pregnancy blues (a.k.a baby blues) symptomsPostpartum depression symptoms
- Exhaustion
- Mild Depression
- Mild Anxiety
- Irritability
- Weepiness
- Mood Swings
- Disappear on their own
- Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood
- Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism or worthlessness
- Feelings of guilt, helplessness
- Loss of interest in hobbies and activities that you once enjoyed
- Decreased energy and constant fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
-Insomnia, early-morning awakening or oversleeping
- Loss of weight and/or appetite or its exact opposite: overeating and weight gain
- Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
- Thoughts of harming baby
- Restlessness, irritability
- Persistent physical symptoms that don’t respond to treatment, e.g. chronic pain, headaches
- Last for many weeks or months without treatment
- Can occur days or even months following the birth of your child
